The objectives and mission of Sanitation and Hygiene practices towards achieving Swachhta was initiated by the Department of Public Health Engineering Department ( PHED) Dibrugarh, in association with  the Tea Garden Management and concerned officials, Chief Coordinators of SBM (Dibrugarh University)  and members of NGO Aagroh, here at the workers line of Jalan Nagar Tea Estate ( South) , on Dec' 8, 2018.

In this regard, an awareness meeting was organized amongst the residents of the tea workers community for bringing about behavioural change in their day to day hygiene and sanitation related habits. Most importantly the said meeting was a step in the process of educating the people who are living in and around the area, to do away with their open defecation habits and the negative concerns affecting their health.

The open defecation habits of the residents as stated by the concerned officials negated the way in making Dibrugarh an ODF District, in realizing the import and substance of Swachh Bharat Mission.

As such, the Deputy Commissioner Laya Madduri Madam on receiving complaints of open defecation within the aforesaid tea garden area, called upon the concerned department to take up programs and camps for bringing change in the sanitation and hygiene habits of the said people.

During the meeting it was understood that due to lack of toilets the people defecated in the open and so the people through the Asha Karmis, Adolescent Girls Club and Mahila Samiti members were asked to share the available toilets till the construction of new toilets were done.

Affirmatively, a pledge to declare an open defecation free environment with the learning of good and healthy cleanliness habits among the tea garden workers,  was adopted in the right direction.
